AXIS Network Camera 213 PTZ - digital video camera ( 0220-004 ) Review

AXIS Network Camera 213 PTZ - digital video camera ( 0220-004 )
Average Reviews:

I have two Axis 213-PTZ cameras. They are one serial number apart and were obtained at the same time. One works great. The zoom is amazing. The U/I leaves a bit to be desired and there are some features lacking - most notably the ability to limit an "operator" account to just selecting the preset positions. If you allow operator access, they can use all the functions of the camera. There are workarounds documented in the Axis customer forum - but they involve crafting control scripts.
The other camera, after a flash upgrade of the firmware, failed with a "NO VIDEO" message. Axis says it is a known hardware issue and charged me $75 to "repair" the camera. I reinstalled the unit and it had exactly the same error. I am far less than satisfied with the service.
You can follow this case on the Axis Forum at this URL:
http://custforum.axis.com/viewtopic.php?p=3240&sid=f283bd219e1e49931b9c14014c4d4512#3240
I am wondering how long it will take to get this fixed.
I like the camera - but Axis customer service leaves much to be desired. It is all documented in the forum page.
For the high cost of this camera, I think the money is better spent on a Sony or Panasonic

I bought this remote to replace a secondary keyless remote that was ruined by a small toddler. The remote came quickly and was easy to program. Within a week, however, the remote stopped working reliably. I reprogrammed it a few times, but it continued to have problems. I contacted the company and within days I received a new remote, free of charge. They were courteous, prompt, and apologetic about the problem. They wanted to make things right, which is so rare these days in a company. So far the new remote is working perfectly. I will update if that changes.

Philips MCM530 150-Watt Micro Shelf System with 5-Disc CD/MP3 Changer and Digital AM/FM Tuner Review

Philips MCM530 150-Watt Micro Shelf System with 5-Disc CD/MP3 Changer and Digital AM/FM Tuner
Average Reviews:

I was a more than a little leary of ordering this. I've not had good luck with Philips electronics in the past, but this little wonder put those fears to rest.
First of all, it looks great. I love the styling, although I'm still not real fond of the blonde speaker cabinets, but it's growing on me.
The unit sounds like a washing machine when you first turn it on, I guess it's checking each of the CD drives. The main reason I bought this was the MP3 capabilities, and I believe Philips has optimized it for that purpose. Instead of a single platter type changer, it has FIVE separate cd trays. You can play all 5 CDs straight through, but shuffle and repeat modes only apply to the current disk. So, if you load this thing with 5 CDs, it won't shuffle between all 5 disks, only the current one, then it switches to the next CD. This is fine if you want to shuffle through a homemade MP3 CD each with hundreds of songs, but not so good for plain old audio CDs.
The best feature of the unit is the sound, it is enormous for such a little thang. I have a big Sony system in my with den with huge JBL speakers, and this little dynamo sounds darn near as good.
I've compared standard audio CDs versus my homemade MP3 CDs, and I really can't tell the difference in sound quality. It has 4 equalizer and 4 reverb settings, they all sound great to me. The MAX SOUND is basically a loudness button on steroids, boosting both the highs and lows and adding some reverb. Again, I hate to keep repeating this, but it sounds great for such a little unit.
It has a clock display and a timer feature. The FM tuner is okay, it comes with one of those dopey wire antennas, I wish it had a telescoping type instead.
Overall I am very happy with this unit and would recommend it to my friends.

The Philips MCM530 micro shelf system offers robust power and a host of great listening features in a sleek, compact package, making it a great choice for offices, kitchens, and finished basements. The system centers around the five-disc CD changer, which lets you play hours of uninterrupted music in a single setting. The CD changer also plays self-recorded CD-Rs and CD-RWs, so you can create your own soundtracks, along with MP3s recorded on a CD-R/RW. Because a single MP3-CD can hold up to 10 hours of music, adding five of them to your changer results in a staggering 50 hours of consecutive tunes--enough to satisfy even the most zealous music fan. The CD player also includes a variety of essential playback modes, including 99-track programming, repeat (one or all discs), and shuffle play.
Adding to the MCM530's value is the system's USB PC link. Simply connect the stereo to a PC via the included USB cord and you can start streaming audio directly from your laptop or desktop. The function is a great way to listen to MP3s recorded on your hard drive or enjoy Internet radio stations broadcasting from across the country. Plus, it's easy to manage your computer's audio files by installing the included MusicMatch software onto your hard drive. Listeners who want a more traditional radio outlet can opt for to activate the system's digital AM/FM tuner, which has room for up to 40 memory presets for quickly changing channels or surfing through the full dial.
The system's rich audio stems from the pair of two-way bass reflex speakers, each of which boasts a 5.25-inch woofer and 2-inch tweeter. The speakers (75 watts per channel) are also quite powerful for a shelf system, especially when teamed with Philips' Max Sound technology, which boosts both the highs and lows for a louder, cleaner overall sound. Additional features include a CD/radio alarm with a sleep timer, an auxiliary input for connecting an iPod or MP3 player, and a headphone jack.
The MCM530 measures 6.9 by 10.6 by 12.4 inches (W x H x D) while each speaker checks in at 7.1 by 10.6 by 8.7 inches. The system also carries a one-year warranty.
What's in the Box Main unit, two speakers, FM wire antenna, AM loop antenna, 32-key remote control, two AA batteries, AC power cord, 3-meter USB cable, CD-ROM (with USB PC link driver, MusicMatch, software, and Sound Agent software), user's manual.

This clock was perfect for me when I got it. No radio presets (I never change my station) it plays my iPod, has a USB port for a thumb drive, large LED's, 2 alarms... Ever since I bought it 4 months ago I have really appreciated it. However, recently the bottom half of the LED's do not work. So it's impossible to tell the time! All I can get are the top 3 LED's of any particular number. I'll try taking it apart, but it's probably done for.

Acoustic Research ART7 Tabletop HD Radio with iPod Docking Station (Black) Review

Acoustic Research ART7 Tabletop HD Radio with iPod Docking Station (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great HD radio with Ipod dock! It combines all the positive attributes of similar items in a single package. The sound is wonderful, and it is easy to set up the time and dual alarms. It is also customizable - display brighness, alarm source and wake up volume. The alarm begins at 0% and gradually increases to the volume you set for a gentle wake up. There is also a never-change back-up battery so you won't have to keep re-setting the time and alarm. You can also see the time when the radio or Ipod is playing, unlike some radios - important in the morning if you are trying to get up by a certain time. The only negative is the footprint which might be a bit large for some nightstands. However, the sound is wonderful and not tinny like smaller units, so that's the tradeoff. I highly recoomend this product.

RCA RP5500i Universal iPod Dock AM/FM Clock Radio Review

RCA RP5500i Universal iPod Dock AM/FM Clock Radio

(More customer reviews)
This is a sleek clock radio with a very handy way of plugging in your Ipod. You receive a whole set of Ipod base adapters so that you can use a variety of models. Having said that, be advised that this unit is not for those who will want to listen to radio very much. At first glance, this appears to be a digitally-tuned radio. And I think it might really be. The radio frequency number appears on the LED read-out as you tune. The huge problem is that there are no pre-sets. Each time you want to change stations, you must turn an incredibly sensitive thumb wheel. You must tune up and down each frequency very carefully. If you want an AM station at 1070, you must be very precise or you will land on 1060 or 1080. The same goes for FM. This radio is only for those who listen to only one station most of the time. With the other nice features, and the price, it is hard to understand why the engineers did not add pre-sets for the radio frequencies.

The DVR operates well and is straight forward to connect. The remote control on the other hand is a little bizarre when it comes to navigating through the on screen set-up. The instruction book was obviously translated from another language so it can be challenging to understand. The cameras are small and nice looking but have mediocre video quality. You won't be able to read a license plate but you can definitely see what happened to know where to look for finger prints. Not bad for a 4 camera DVR under $500.

Average Reviews:

...be aware that these are TWO ohm speakers, whereas the standard normal impedance for car speakers is 4 ohms.
What that means is tha particularly if you have an aftermarket head unit, you will need an external amplifier to run them properly. Most OEM and about all aftermarket head units cannot handle a 2 ohm load by themselves, you risk damaging them without an amp. If you don't want to get an external amp then the Infinity Reference series would be a better choice, they are 4 ohms.
That said, I am running mine off a PPI pcx-480 at 160wpc and they sound great. If you are a basshead you will still need a sub of course, but for my tastes (instrumental & vocal jazz, classical, a little rock) these Kappas provide excellent detail.
My stock speakers (05 Camry) were muddy as all hell, they were full range speakers whereas these have their own external crossovers. I chose a 2-way over 3-way design because I think having one less crossover makes the sound more accurate and natural, that's always been my experience with home audio speakers.
UPDATE: a couple of months later, I regret not simply buying front component speakers (separate tweeter and woofer) like the Polks I have in my truck, there is no comparison---the separation of those 2 drivers yields a huge improvement in sound quality. I should have listened to the guys on caraudioforum dot com and bought front components and a subwoofer to run from my 4-channel amp and abandoned the rear deck speakers entirely.

New for 2005 is the redesigned .7-Series that features UniPivot a patented rotating tweeter system for perfecting sound imaging regardless of mounting location. The tweeter is also tunable on the spot! With a turn of the tweeter, you can adjust the emphasis level without having to access the external crossover. These new edge-driven Metal Matrix Diaphragm (M.M.D.) tweeters are similar to those found in high-end home audio speakers. That means mobile audiophiles will appreciate the increased power handling and reduced distortion at high output levels. The SLI (Super Low Impedance) high-output design extracts every last watt from the amplifiers source, increasing overall system output and efficiency. Also new for 2005 is the Neodymium motor structure with integrated heatsink. This cutting-edge motor technology provides massive power handling while maintaining a minimal mounting depth. The integrated heatsink wicks heat away from the motor structure, increasing power while reducing distortion. The redesigned .7-Series mid and woofer cones feature woven-glass fiber material for unmatched stiffness and damping ability. The result is the cleanest, snappiest mid-bass with absolutely no coloration or distortion. The cone also features Plus One sizing and a hi-roll butyl rubber surround, which maximizes the cone area and excursion capability for maximum performance at high volume. Redesigned, nonconductive, cast polymer baskets are tooled for shallow mount applications. Each Kappa speaker comes with a computer designed outboard crossover that has been voice-matched for total accuracy.

Suunto X9i GPS Altimeter Compass Review

Suunto X9i GPS Altimeter Compass
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found the remarks of the one other positive reviewer quite a relief: the guy who pointed out that good performance of the GPS (i.e. the key unique feature distinguishing this watch from other Suunto models) hinges critically on whether or not you first get your satellite 'fix' properly. I have found that, if you wait the very first time you use it, to get a proper (not flashing) firm fix, then subsequent fixes have been relatively rapid (usually around 2 minutes in an urban environment. Once you have a lock-on, then subsequent performance is relatively fine.
I have a few minor gripes about the software visualisation. When it does loose satellite connection, rather than not graphing for the drop out period of time, the software includes the squiggly deviations to route when it can't locate you. This has the consequence that some journeys appear like I fly around or walk on water. This is not the case. I would prefer just blanks for drop-out periods of time. Any GPS device works much better in open spaces rather than built-up urban ramblings.
As a watch model, the comparable device is the Garmin forerunner. The Garmin probably has more 'stickability' and usability for its GPS (I have Garmin handheld for comparison). Its greater reception and stronger GPS reception is due to its bigger aerial. That means it's also bigger and probably emitting strange things into your arm. The battery life on Garmin receivers is very frustrating and I have had no problems with the x9i though its continual GPS use would be limited to 4-5 hours. Personally, I am prepared to live with the slightly more delicate reception of the x9i in order to use a much more elegant device. The watch looks like a watch and its smooth contours and rubberised grippy surface have design aesthetics and simplicity of display that Garmin doesn't. If you primarily (or only) use GPS, buy the Garmin. If you are concerned about looks and multi-function and if you are patient to setup a good connection first time, I think you will be pleasantly rewarded by this watch. I really like that it charges off my USB. Also, using Desktop Parallels and Win XP, I exchange the data into Trek Manager and X-loader uploading to Google with my Macbook ;-)

Suunto X6M Wrist-Top Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, Clinometer and PC-Interface Review

Suunto X6M Wrist-Top Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, Clinometer and PC-Interface
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a Suunto fan and I own/owned several Suunto Watches including Mosquito scuba diving computer (I like it very much although my first failed) and Observer (that I have lost when I was snowboarding). While I like the Suunto approach, here I will be rather critical in order to give Suunto and to the potential buyer an unbiased review on this watch. I will not deal with features described in the menu, but I will focus on issues I would like to see solved/improved.
I have both good and bad experience with Suunto. In all, I think they strive to push the design and reliability, which I do appreciate. I want to emphasize that X6M is an elegant watch and a significant upgrade when compared to e.g. Observer that has no PC download capabilities. Moreover, all Suunto watches I have owned were very very accurate. I certainly would recommend this watch to a friend, but I would also remind him of following things:
Cons:
Most irritating:
1.I do not understand why Suunto makes such a bad, low quality bands/strap. Even the most expensive titanium Suunto bands (Observer Titanium) are still made from silicon rubber (or similar material) with decorative titanium scales. This material wears out in year or two and breaks (that is why I lost my Observer). The X6M comes with a composite leather/rubber band that is very soft and feels great but due to very low quality of the material it breaks very quickly. Moreover, after hand wash or shower it stays wet for couple of hours. It is a shame to put such band on watch like this. I replaced it with a plastic one that I bought for $[...] from [...].
Less irritating:
1.Buttons are kind of loose and when pushed there is an occasional click, which is rather annoying. Suunto claims the watch is water resistant to 100m, but the buttons are not to be touched while submerged e.g. during snorkeling or even in shower. By my opinion, for a manufacturer who designs top of the line scuba computers such an issue is unacceptable. Some people even reported fogging after showering. I do not have such problem for now (I swim and dove in a pool to 15 ft-no problem), but after reading those Suunto lines on not touching the buttons while showering I do not feel very comfortable swimming with them.
2. Alarm has no weekday functions! Say, if I want to wake up early only on Mondays only, I have to insert the exact dates for those days. This was the same with Observer (if I remember correctly), and I just do not get why Suunto ignores the weekday alarm option. Good thing is, Suunto improved the alarm sound, which is now much louder than used to be on Observer. Alarm on Observer was a joke.

3. No count-down timer on X6M or Mosquito or Observer.
4. To me, Suunto has sometime strange logic in organizing its menu. This watch has two modes to be selected from - baro and alti. The watch then interprets the air pressure changes either as an altitude change or barometric pressure change (weather function). Since the choice affects all the calculations, it should be included in "general (main)" menu, yet it is not available there. Instead, the selection is made in each menu (compass, weather, hiking, chrono), while missing in general menu. To me this is strange.
5. The glass is stated to be mineral, but I would like to see an option of having a sapphire glass as well (Say titanium body w/ saphire glass). The glass on X6M seems to have an anti reflexive coating(I am not sure though), which is very nice I it has no scratch for now (3 months of wearing) but the mineral glass on Observer got scratched rather easily. I am hoping the X6m uses better mineral glass than the Observer.
Not irritating but improvement can be made:
1.The watch is quite heavy and if made from titanium it would be great and comfortable. Still the stainless steel material is very nicely polished and I like the look in spite of the weight.
2. The illumination works OK, but when I compare it say to Casio watches, it is much weaker and the blue light is not that homogeneous.
3. In compass mode I would offer to the user an option of choosing between rose (rotating icon) or rotating bezel. Such options is not provided.
4. X6M indicates the selected mode by a little black dot next to the mode icons located on the left from the display. The mode icons, however are not visible at night and they also cannot be illuminated. This is not a problem, but there is no reason to make the mode icons part of the display.
5. The chrono display uses strange indication of elapse time (e.g. 0.00,0 instead of clasical 0:00:0 (hours:min:sec)). I am not sure why Suunto opt for such display.
Last, the good things: X6M is just much easier to use then Observer. The menus are much more intuitive, the fifth (menu) button really helps. The PC download is easy and convenient. I like this watch and I only hope it will last long time. I am OK with replacing the plastic strap every year, but if Suunto comes with a sturdy metal band I will go for it.
Good luck!

Peripheral PLD10 10X RCA Signal Booster Review

Peripheral PLD10 10X RCA Signal Booster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased the schosche FM-Mod02 FM Modulator to play audiobooks through my car radio with my Sansa Fuze. I had two problems with the modulator. First, The volume level was decreased by the modulator so that even with full volume on my Fuze my quieter Audio Books were hard to hear and I had to turn the volume on my radio way up. Second, I could not charge my fuze while listening because of a serious ground loop problem, as soon as I plugged power in all you would hear is a buzz.
This Booster solved both problems at once. I could easily adjust the volume level on it and reach even higher levels than my radio stations with the radio volume set the same. I can now leave my volume on my fuze set to 75% and get all the volume I want out of the radio volume control. The ground loop problem completely disappeared. I can now charge and listen at the same time. I would highly recommend this product to anyone with a setup like mine.

Aluratek AIREC01F WiFi Internet Radio - Home Theater Edition (Black) Review

Aluratek AIREC01F WiFi Internet Radio - Home Theater Edition (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had much better luck than the previous reviewer. My unit worked out of the box and has continued to work for about four weeks, with no trouble whatsoever. (I have only used the WiFi internet radio feature so I cannot comment on the other things it can do.)
I would give the unit five stars but for one concern: The Aluratek business model. The tuner depends upon an Aluratek server to set up stations. The good news/bad news is that there is no annual subscription fee.
It appears that Aluratek pays for the server out of cash flow from sales. If sales ever fall off, there goes the server, and there goes the radio. Hopefully somebody will figure out how to hack it before the server goes away.

GE Wireless Phone Jack System - Turn any AC outlet into a phone jack Review

GE Wireless Phone Jack System - Turn any AC outlet into a phone jack

I returned a different brand after it quit working only a few days after installing it. That brand also had hissing background noise.
This product is much better as it has no noticeable background noise at all. It works like it's directly connected to the phone line.

AUDIOVOX SBAR BAR-TYPE PARKING SENSOR SYSTEM Review

AUDIOVOX SBAR BAR-TYPE PARKING SENSOR SYSTEM
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this despite no reviews. Installation was very easy, (odyssey 2006). I installed on the lower edge of the license plate, drilled a hole to take the wire inside, and connected to the rear lamp circuit. Stuck the buzzer on the rear window.
It works by buzzing loudly when it senses an obstacle 3 to 4 feet away, when reversing. The actual height of the obstacle sensed depends on where its mounted (lower near the bumper or higher near the license plate). It has three sensors, the outer two are angled out slightly. It does not seem to give out wide coverage and basically works when the obstacle is right in front of the sensor bar. The sensor bar seems well made and robust. All in all, a decent product.

iLive IHT3817DT Studio Series Speaker Dock with 2.1 Channel Sound System and Remote Control for iPod (Black) Review

iLive IHT3817DT Studio Series Speaker Dock with 2.1 Channel Sound System and Remote Control for iPod (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My intent in implementing iLive IHT3817DT-IB 2.1 Soundbar was to supplant the built in speakers of my plasma TV as the TV speaker's sound was thin at best. The iLive Soundbar was integrated into a setup where the broadcast TV tuner of the plasma TV would drive the audio to the Soundbar. I also integrated iLive Soundbar where cable TV was derived from a Verizon set-top box via FiOS service. The Verizon set-top box drives the audio to the iLive Soundbar. I had intended to use one of the remotes to control all three devices so that programming could be done on one remote control.
The integration revealed three weaknesses in design of the iLive Soundbar:
1. The RCA input connections are facing downward on the Soundbar in a position that requires 90 degree angle adapters to be used in order to properly hide the wiring behind the Soundbar when it is mounted to a wall. This increases the total implemented cost.
2. The iLive remote control does not have an infrared code available to program other remote control devices that are capable of controlling multiple devices. In essence, your stuck using the iLive remote along with other remote controls to accommodate multiple devices.
3. The iLive IHT3817DT-IB 2.1 Soundbar does not have an adapter fitting for third generation iPOD devices. Third generation iPOD devices can be used without the adapter fitting, but the connection is fragile and is prone to damage if the iPOD is bumped while inserted on the mating connector.
On the positive side, the iLive IHT3817DT-IB 2.1 Soundbar strengths are good quality sound, sleek look and simple mounting scheme.
I was able to work around the remote control problems by using a Harmony 880 universal remote control. These are costly but allow programming without the need for infrared code.

Jump to the next generation of iPod speaker sound with the iLive IHT3817DT 2.1-channel system, which not only offers a topnotch audio performance, but also a host of connectivity options for other audio and video devices. The unit starts with a built-in iPod docking station, which works with the iPod 3G, iPod 4G (click wheel), iPod photo 4G, iPod video 5G and 5.5G, iPod mini, iPod shuffle, and iPod nano 1G and 2G. Thanks to the docking station, you can play, charge, and sync your iPod all at once, no extra cords required. The sound, meanwhile, is guaranteed to impress thanks to the pair of full-range stereo speakers and dual subwoofers, which provide a far broader and more robust audio range than most systems in the iPod category. Add in True 3D and SRS TruBass audio enhancements and you have a great system for watching movies in addition to listening to music. The speakers are even magnetically shielded, so they won't interfere with the picture when placed near a TV.
Other than the wide-ranging speaker system, the IHT3817DT's most distinguishing feature is its variety of inputs and outputs. The unit includes four A/V inputs--two RCA and two S-video--along with a traditional L/R audio input and a 3.5 mm auxiliary input. As a result, you can hook up a host of audio and video devices to the speaker system, including a portable MP3 player, full-size CD player, DVD player, satellite receiver, camcorder, and more. At the same time, the system offers composite and S-video output jacks, so you can connect your iPod video or photo to a TV and view your pictures and videos on the big screen. Unlike most iPod speaker setups, the IHT3817DT can actually function as a comprehensive entertainment system, with cables running to most of your audio and video devices.
Other details include a digital AM/FM stereo with station presets for easy channel surfing; a backlit LCD display with a clock, alarm, and sleep timer; several preset equalizer settings; a headphone jack for private listening; a motorized iPod docking drawer; a full-feature remote control; and a mini-USB jack for PC communication (includes USB cable). The IHT3817DT, which is wall-mountable (includes hardware), measures 34.2 by 9.8 by 7 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a 90-day warranty.
What's in the Box IHT3817DT speaker system, remote control, remote batteries, USB cable, audio line-in cable, mounting hardware, built-in cord, user's manual.
