Channel Plus DMT16 Telephone Distribution Module Review

Channel Plus DMT16 Telephone Distribution Module
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Channel Plus DMT-16 Telephone Distribution Module to rewire the phone lines in my ~50 year old house. Our old 2-line phone system had been cobbled together over the years and was plagued with lots of crosstalk and line noise that interfered with my ADSL Internet connection and even with normal telephone conversations at times. I had previously wired my home for a computer Ethernet network, but had no other significant experience with wiring prior to using the DMT-16.
I replaced all of the phone wiring with Cat 5 (actually "Cat 6"), 23 gauge, solid conductor, unshielded twisted pair computer network wiring, and added several new phone jacks using 12 of the DMT-16's 16 potential locations. We only have 2 phone lines, but the DMT-16 allows for up to 4 lines. The DMT-16 uses a type of connection called a 110 punchdown connection. The connection between the DMT-16 and the phone wire is made with a simple 110 punchdown tool (not included) that is very easy to use, and does not require stripping the insulation off of the wires. Each connection on the DMT-16 is clearly color-coded for use with computer wire making the wiring scheme easy to keep straight. I used "tooless" jacks on the other ends of the wires that don't require the punchdown tool and actually preferred the secure feel of the DMT-16's connections.
The DMT-16 includes a simple labeling system where you can clearly and easily label each wire for future reference. It has separate mounting brackets for either a dedicated rack mount or for a wall mount. The instructions were clear and useful, but they do seem to presuppose a certain preexisting level of knowledge with phone wiring. I was easily able to find any additional instructions and tips that I needed on the Internet with no other outside help.
I connected the DMT-16 to our home alarm system using its RJ-31X security system interface. Typical telephone "6P6C" jacks are often called "RJ-11" and "RJ-12" jacks (depending on how the 6P6C jack is wired), and they have 6-positions for 6-contacts. The RJ-31X security system jack uses an 8P8C computer Ethernet jack that is wired in the RJ-31X pattern for the alarm system. I had to make a cable to reach from the alarm system controller to where I wanted to place the DMT-16, but it was no harder than wiring the phone lines. When the alarm system is triggered, the RJ-31X connection on the DMT-16 allows the alarm system to "seize" the line to contact the alarm company's monitoring office. I tested the RJ-31X connector on the DMT-16 and it works fine.
The DMT-16 also adds surge protection for the phone lines, and it has indicator lights to show which lines are in use.
I found using the DMT-16 the easiest part of my rewiring project. Since wiring our house with the DMT-16 we no longer have crosstalk between the two lines, and the "sizzling bacon" line noise that we suffered from is gone. I wired the ADSL line directly from the modem to a special whole house filter/splitter in the telephone company's Network Interface Device bypassing the DMT-16 (thereby eliminating the need for DSL filters on each phone inside the house), but I did try the DSL Internet connection through the DMT-16 prior to installing the splitter and it worked fine. I recommend the Channel Plus DMT-16 Telephone Distribution Module for do-it-yourselfers.

Knockoff
Worked "ok" after about a weeks worth of setup. Picture quality marginal at best. After searching forever for somewhere to get support, found out this is a knockoff of another product. Trying to update the software bricked the camera, but I was warned that this may happen. I was happy to toss it in the trash, but sad I spent the money on it.

Mi Casa Verde Vera 2 Home Controller Review

Mi Casa Verde Vera 2 Home Controller
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have seen so many up and down reviews for the Mi Casa Verde VERA2 controller that I was on the fence on whether or not I should buy one. The only other options for this kind of control are either relatively expensive or require a PC on at all times. This controller and system are VERY simple once you get them setup. I must admit that the directions were slightly incorrect. When you are FIRST programming your Zwave lights/sensors/etc, make sure that they are NOT included in any other network! Meaning, you will have to remove them from existing remotes/controllers FIRST. Then you can plug the battery operated Vera2 in and run around your house adding your devices. This was the tricky part for me... Vera2 instructions said that the Zwave light should turn on after 60 seconds of being plugged into the battery. The reality is, it took closer to 5 minutes. Then, once all devices are added you are to press the Zwave button and plug Vera2 into your router. After doing so and following the on screen system it said "No devices were found, Press OK". That was disappointing but once I clicked OK, I decided to log into my MIOS account and lone behold Vera added all my Zwave lights and sensors. Seemed a little bit tricky but I will manage.
From the MIOS page, you can label the switches, add timers, add events (when "blank" sensor is active, turn on lamp or send a text), the options seem endless. You can add as many scenes as you want and arrange your lights into rooms/levels of your house for easier control. MAKE SURE TO PRESS THE SAVE BUTTON WHEN YOU MAKE CHANGES IN MIOS!! That lesson took a bit to figure out. Also, you need to be patient when updating lights and controls and pressing on/off buttons. If it says "Sever Busy" wait 20-30 seconds before clicking other buttons.
Now for the true test. I wanted this control on my PHONE. I have an android phone so I tried the Home Buddy app (which was free). When connected to my WiFi in my house, the setup was easy. To get it working remotely was a little trickier but again, pretty self explanatory and took some trial and error. WOW!!! Now I can view the status of my lights, garage door, thermostat, doors, etc. ALL from my phone with a 3G, 4G, or any WiFi connection. PLUS, the system can be customized to send a text message if any event you select is triggered. Example; I have an event for "Leave Home" which turns off all lights in the house and "arms" motion sensors (turns them on). If a door sensor or motion sensor is triggered I will receive an instant text message. This is a nice piece of mind when away for business. My next add on will be the Kwikset Door locks which have a built in motor to lock/unlock the deadbolt for my front door. I love the control I have with Vera2 and use mine daily!
I'm not sure if others had problems with different Vera2 firmware updates that mine already had or if they did not have the knowledge for some tinkering but I had my system up and running in about 2-3 hours. That includes adding all my Zwave devices (which is the longest part).

AXIS Network Camera 213 PTZ - digital video camera ( 0220-004 ) Review

AXIS Network Camera 213 PTZ - digital video camera ( 0220-004 )
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have two Axis 213-PTZ cameras. They are one serial number apart and were obtained at the same time. One works great. The zoom is amazing. The U/I leaves a bit to be desired and there are some features lacking - most notably the ability to limit an "operator" account to just selecting the preset positions. If you allow operator access, they can use all the functions of the camera. There are workarounds documented in the Axis customer forum - but they involve crafting control scripts.
The other camera, after a flash upgrade of the firmware, failed with a "NO VIDEO" message. Axis says it is a known hardware issue and charged me $75 to "repair" the camera. I reinstalled the unit and it had exactly the same error. I am far less than satisfied with the service.
You can follow this case on the Axis Forum at this URL:
http://custforum.axis.com/viewtopic.php?p=3240&sid=f283bd219e1e49931b9c14014c4d4512#3240
I am wondering how long it will take to get this fixed.
I like the camera - but Axis customer service leaves much to be desired. It is all documented in the forum page.
For the high cost of this camera, I think the money is better spent on a Sony or Panasonic

Linksys Compact Wireless-G Internet Video Camera Review

Linksys Compact Wireless-G Internet Video Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The image quality of this camera isn't great, and as the other reviewer states, it needs lots of light. The resolution of the video is fairly poor, comparable to a very cheap 4-year-old webcam. If you need to see detail in the image (e.g. for certain security-camera purposes), then it will not work.
Another thing to note is that this camera is much bigger than it looks--it is about the size of your hand. I was hoping to squeeze it into a tight space, but the camera's size took me by surprise. It will be difficult to hide this camera if you are hoping to use it for hidden security purposes.
In sum, if you need a cheap camera that can sit out in the open and take low-detail video of a well-lit room, then this is your product. Otherwise, you should look for more professional (or wired) cameras.

The Linksys Compact Wireless-G Internet Video Camera sends live video through the Internet to a web browser anywhere in the world! This compact, self-contained unit lets you keep track of your home, your kids, your workplace -- whatever's important to you. Unlike standard "web cams" that require an attached PC, the Internet Video Camera contains its own web server, so it can connect directly to a network, either over Wireless-G (802.11g) networking, or over 10/100 Ethernet cable. The advanced MPEG-4 video compression produces a high-quality, high-frame rate, up to 320x240 video stream. The Compact Internet Video Camera's unique form-factor and wireless connectivity allows you to mount it on a wall nearly anywhere, or slip it into its included stand for desktop use. Once it's connected to your home network, you can "see what it sees" from any Windows-based PC in the house, while the video stream is secured from the outside world, hidden behind your Router. If you want the video to be visible from outside your home network, you can open an appropriate port on the Router, and then create password protected accounts to manage access to the camera, or leave it wide open for the world to see. The SoloLink domain service (trial sign-up included) lets you access your camera using an easy-to-remember "name", even if your home Internet connection uses a dynamic IP address.
