Vizia RF Z-Wave Programmer/Controller Review

Vizia RF Z-Wave Programmer/Controller
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Vizia RZCPG-BSG and the RZCPG-SG are solid products. They serve first as programmers and then as remote controls. They are the same, except that the SG has timed-event programming and an AC supply so that it can stay on all the time. If you build a Leviton Vizia z-wave network, your RZCPG is your best friend.
Unfortunately, the documentation that comes with the RZCPG is simply incomplete. Use a Google search to find and download the HA10110701BH Vizia rf Systems Guide. Read pages 9 through 15. I recommend two additional one-pager downloads as well: HABH0665080 and HABH0624082. Then download the RZCPG manual, and it will make sense.
I need to warn you about a couple of "gotchas." First, not all Leviton Vizia products are z-wave. The z-wave switches and dimmers are called Vizia rf or Vizia rf +. If they don't say rf, don't buy. (The plus sign is for the newer versions, but old versions are good.) The second "gotcha" is that all Vizia rf products (and most z-wave products from other vendors) are not scene-capable. "Scene capability" is Vizia-speak for products that support the definition and control of "scenes" that have different combinations of light intensities. Instead of "scene," the word, "zone" is used to refer to pure off/on mode control. (Other vendors may use different terms.) Also, if you are going to control low-voltage lights (that go through a transformer) or fluorescent lights, you need a special dimmer that costs about double. Decide what you want and account for all your costs before buying the RZCPG, which may be only the tip of the cost iceberg.
I've tried mixing GE and Intermatic Home Settings devices with Leviton. My experience with those was limited to non-scene-capable devices, which were picked up successfully by the RZCPG. They functioned fine under zone control, but they would not function at all, even in on/off mode, in RZCPG scenes. See the Systems Guide for more info on compatibility. The RZCPG refused to pick up a Home Pro z-wave appliance switch at all. Bottom line: Leviton Vizia rf with scene capability is the safest, most robust, most versatile option.
Next, I want to offer you one user's opinion of the RZCPG and the networks it can help you create: they're amazing. Mounted on the wall at the entry to my home theatre is a four-button controller. With one touch, I can set relative intensities for 10 lights. I have scenes for eating and watching movies (lights brighter around the table), watching sports (lights brighter all around), and just watching movies (lights very dim). If, at any time, I want any light to be a little brighter or dimmer in one of these "scenes," I can modify the scene in about 20 seconds flat, and the modification persists when I invoke the scene again. If I have a scene set up and turned on, I can brighten or dim the entire scene from either the RZCPG or from the secondary controller on the wall with no persistent effect on the scene.
Installing the dimmers/switches in the wall is the same as for any two-way dimmer. Three-way switching can be different, so look at the documentation before buying. Installing the in-wall controllers is a simple matter of getting a hot (black), common (white) and ground to the controller. If this is familiar territory, go for it. Once things are installed properly, the above documentation should get you through the programming in good shape. I wish I had more space to offer more lessons learned. As it is, I hope this much will save you some time and money.
I also hope Leviton is paying attention. Dear Leviton, you sink millions into excellent product development and then make your products inaccessible through sloppy documentation management -- what are you thinking? Dear publishing world, where is the z-wave Missing Manual? This technology merits the effort to produce good documentation.

Set up a Z-Wave automation network in your home, and you'll be able to control lighting and appliances remotely using RF technology. The Vizia RF Z-Wave Programmer/Controller is required for programming Leviton Vizia Z-Wave scenes and links, and it also functions as a handheld remote control that will turn on a light or every light from the comfort of your bed or sofa, even if the lights or appliances you're controlling are in another room or on another floor of your home.

iHome iH8 Clock Radio for iPod (Silver) Review

iHome iH8 Clock Radio for iPod (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Update Feb 7, 2010.... I wrote my original review almost 2 years ago. And, as I said, I liked the unit so well that I bought a 2nd. But now that I've used them for a couple years, they both have become unusable as alarm clocks. I assume dust has worked its way under the wheels used to set the clock. Now you can spin the wheels but the alarm time remains the same. Happened on both units. Call me old fashioned but that is too soon for these things to wear out...and the fact that both units have the same problem indicates a design flaw.
Also, I was not pleased that with my newer iPod connected, my radio would just be total static. It was tolerable, only because I preferred to wake up to the iPod, but I should be able to wake up to the iPod and radio, not just to the iPod or static.
So, I've changed my rating from a 4 to a 2. These things weren't that expensive, but combine the design problems with the fact that both units no longer allow me to change the time of the alarm, and it makes this product something I would not recommend.

Delphi MyFi XM2GO Portable XM Satellite Radio Receiver with Home / Car Kits Review

Delphi MyFi XM2GO Portable XM Satellite Radio Receiver with Home / Car Kits
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had my MyFi for a week now and I must say that it has exceeded my expectations. I do live in an urban area where reception is great (DC) but I find that I rarely use the live programming when on the run and just rely on my recorded content.
First what's great about the MyFi:
1) I'm new to satellite radio and was very impressed with the variety of music available. I've discovered lots of artists that while I had my Ipod I never knew existed. Add to that the great live events, talk radio, and other content.
2) XM2Go works flawlessly. But for the limitations (below) it works flawlessly. Pop your MyFi in the cradle at night and in the morning you have 5+ hours of content. Note, the box says 5 hours but in reality if you record any of the more compressed channels (talk etc.) you will end up being able to record more than 5 hours! I believe when I record music channels I actually get closer to 6 hours of recorded content. Once you have your content you can easily scroll from song to song. Skip the ones you don't like. Replay the ones you do.
3) It is truly portable. I go from pocket (headphones), to car (FM transmitter), to home cradle (line-in to the stereo) without ever interrupting listening.
4) It comes with everything you need, including a remote control so you can easily switch channels as your MyFi sits in its cradle across the room (you can't say that about the Ipod). Further, what it comes with is great quality. I love the swivel car cradle - not only do you not have to worry about plugging wires into the MyFi everytime you bring it into the car (they are plugged into the cradle), it makes reading the display a breeze for both the driver and the passenger (just swivel it between the two).
5) Replaceable battery. Unlike the Ipod the MyFi, like a cell phone, has a swappable battery. That means you can (eventually) either buy a replacement when the battery starts to lose strengh without conducting the surgery necessary on the Ipod (this is huge given the amount of use these devices get and the liklihood that batteries will only hold their full capacity charge for 6-12 months) or just have one handy to extend your listening time.
6) It's solid state. Unlike the Ipod you don't have to worry about a hard drive to go bad (like mine did in 8 months!)
7) Recording isn't limited to scheduled records. You can always nab a song here or there by just hitting the XM2Go button.
8) It feels solid in your hand. Yeah, it's bigger and heavier than an Ipod (think thick PDA, or perhaps the Dell MP3 player) but it's designed to fit in your hand well and works well for both left (me) and right handed people.
Now the things you should be aware of (though, knowing them I still would buy one):
1) Don't expect non-stop reception when you are roaming around. Even in metro areas you might drop a signal when you aren't using the home or car kits. I imagine it is difficult at best in non-urban areas to maintain a line of sight with the sats. Just expect that you will need to make use of the recorded content in those situations.
2) Don't expect the sound quality of a high-bitrate MP3 on the Ipod. I suspect that this has everything to do with the nature of Sat radio and nothing to do with the MyFi hardware, but, the quality is not the same. Although I would rate it great, you do notice that you are getting a compressed stream.
3) Don't expect to be able to control your content. Unless you save a recording session for days you won't likely get the same songs day to day (the playlists on XM are vast, rarely are there repeats) (notable exception is if you record the top 20 channel). That's a good thing if you like variety - that's a bad thing if you like the comfort of always having your favorite tunes handy.
4) The AV cable is a bit short (nothing an extension cord couldn't fix).
5) I would like to see a more sophisticated recording scheduler. Currently you can only schedule 2 record sessions and it limits you to recording within the next 24 hours (unless you schedule a daily recording session). With all of the great XM content it would have been nice to be able to set up a recording session several days into the future.
6) I would like to be able to lock or protect songs or even whole sessions from being recorded over by new recording sessions. Currently, the way it works is just a simple first in first out method. Fortunately, it is smart enough to merely delete a portion of an overwritten section as opposed to the whole section.
7) It doesn't buffer like a TiVo/ReplayTV. It would be nice to pause and/or rewind live content.
8) Fianlly, I would love a computer interface so that that XM can distribute updated software to fix some of the above issues.
This product is great.

4229 - Ademco 8 Zone Expander with Relays Review

4229 - Ademco 8 Zone Expander with Relays
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
People often ask why they would need a relay on a zone expander and the reason is simple. If you are monitoring only burg inputs (doors, PIR detectors, window switches) you do not need a relay. But put just ONE wired smoke alarm on the expander and you need to interrupt voltage to the alarm if it goes off to clear and reset the zone (the fire department will insist on this should a detector trigger). All wired detectors are setup to clear their status by interrupting power, which is done here with the relay under command from your panel on the "clear smoke alarm" signal. If your home has 5 bedrooms, a garage, and a living area you could have 7 smoke detectors to meet code. This expansion unit gives you a clean method to include those smoke sensors without a problem when one is activated.
Hint: Wire the power lead to the smokes through the normally closed position on the relay to save power and interrupt it from the panel when clearing the smoke alarms. The relays draw an extra 70mA when energized.

JBL On Stage Micro Portable Speaker Dock for iPod (Green) Review

JBL On Stage Micro Portable Speaker Dock for iPod (Green)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
[UPDATE: Suddenly the value appears to be with black and/or silver JBL Micros. In answer to a question, yes, the Micro comes with a small, compact power adapter. One caution: most iPod dock-speakers can be quite "fussy" about which iPod models they choose to charge and play or simply play and not charge. Check on the return policy of the product, especially if it's not coming directly from Amazon, and be sure to test it frequently and thoroughly for the first couple of weeks. It's not entirely clear what distinguishes the newer Micro II from this 2008 model, but I would assume that the newer model has been minimally tweaked to cover some newer players. Also, although Amazon's prices are among the most reasonable anywhere, some bargains can occasionally be found in warranteed refurb models through the JBL store (located on that "other" big site). Finally, in answer to the purists who find any discussion of speakers used to play MP3 files without merit, there are many degrees of compression in MP3 files, with 128 kbps by no means the "norm." Moreover, even at 128 kbps the differences in the quality of sound is often as dramatic as night and day among some of these little overachievers.]
Presently this JBL On Stage Micro is going for 60% below the price of any other color, making it a no-brainer pick-up among docking speakers normally selling on Amazon for $100 or slightly more. JBL is a stylish, quality brand manufactured by Harmon International--durable, dependable, crisp-sounding. Despite the sharply divided reviews, the sound quality of virtually all speakers in the $80-$150 range is the same, with minor variations subject to differences in taste. I've found popular rechargeable units such as those made by Altec and Logitech to be unstable--sometimes changing iPod models will throw them off completely, requiring a reset with no guarantee of a fix. The JBL Micro, on the other hand, can be depended upon to deliver with either its AC connection or AA non-recharging alkalines.
Best disregard low-end merchandise--iLuv, GPX, Colby, J-Win and, unless you're looking for a clock radio, iHome. The sound is best described as "plastic-like," clearly inferior to a monaural speaker such as that of a Tivoli, Sangean, or Boston Acoustics radio. If you want a substantially improved system, one that goes beyond merely "covering" the entire frequency range to "reproducing" the sounds of the actual instruments, think more in the $200-300 range and look for a Klipsch iGroove, Athena iVoice, or Bose Sound Dock (the drawback--they're not for portable, battery use).
[In response to some misleading reviews: the JBL Micro has proven one of the more durable systems in its price range, and it comes with exceptionally smart packaging (form-fitting, padded storage bag with places for the adapter, remote and cord), guaranteed to make a great impression even before it's been used. Finally, it indeed DOES have a volume control--the left button for softer; the right for louder. Bass is admittedly weaker than some models in this range, but treble is superior and power is ample. If you hear cabinet "rattling," back off on the volume of your source; if you get a loud "hum," simply do an off-on reset. And hang on to the tiny remote (or learn how to live without it). Harmon's answer to my question about a replacement is usually, "It's out of stock."

APC 1300VA Battery Backup with LCD Review

APC 1300VA Battery Backup with LCD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned 7 or 8 UPS's from several mfg's mostly APC and this is a well designed, fully featured unit. Like all Back-UPS models, it has a square wave 115 VAC output which is fine for any device with a switching power supply. This would be most any modern electronic device and all PC's. If you want a sine wave output get a Smart-UPS. I have two Smart-UPS 750 XL's with extra battery pack for 3-4 hour run times on two different PC's at home.
I bought two of these Back-UPS 1300VA units from Amazon at the lowest price I found with free shipping (very important with these heavy items). One is for my HP EX475 MediaSmart Home Server, cable modem, router and switch. The other one is on my home entertainment center with several DVD's, Comcast DVR, VCR, Bose radio, other stuff and a 50 inch Toshiba plasma TV. The Plasma TV pulls 500 watts and with several of the other items running I show 18 minutes run time. The Home Server rack shows 60-80 minutes run time.
The UPS display was a key reason why I bought these units. It provides everything you would want to know about the UPS and the attached load. The UPS is attached via USB cable to the Home Server so it can notify my PC clients and shutdown properly. Very cool.
I have the power loss beeper turned off on both units to avoid bugging me. This can be done with a display button sequence.

The positives: Sound is great, ipod input jack is well designed with various inserts to match different ipods, and controlling the ipod from the remote is a fun feature. Small enough to transport with ease.
The negatives: 2 simple features were not well thought out. 1) The radio is nearly impossible to use, as there is no display (digital or otherwise), so one cannot know where one is on the dial. 2) Oddly enough, the remote control could be used to navigate the ipod, a fun but a completely necessary feature, but cannot do the more useful action of adjusting the volume of the speakers.

Since the guy who sold me my 2005 Xb at toyota was impossible to get in contact with for a FOB, I decided to go online to research keyless remotes. I ended up on amazon.com and found this keyless entry. I knew my used car once had a keyless romote so it was compatible. (ITS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU CAR IS ALREADY KEYLESS ENTRY READY OTHERWISE THIS REMOTE WILL BE USELESS!!!!!) Today my keyless remote came in and i could not be happier. :D The directions were clear and best of all the remote works! This is worth the $74 plus tax. It's cheaper than having the dealership charge for $160 for the exact same thing. I am so thrilled with this remote and would buy it again :)

5897-35 Ademco Wireless Dual Tech Motion Sensor Review

5897-35 Ademco Wireless Dual Tech Motion Sensor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The dualtec system was invented 20 years ago and still remains effective today. The concept is to use the advantages of both a PIR and microwave sensor together to eliminate false alarms altogether due to heat flow, fireplaces, lights, etc. The idea is that automatic thermal changes which will accidentally trigger a PIR (such as a gas fireplace comming on under thermostat control) will NOT trigger a microwave sensor.
Internally to the unit, both sensors (the PIR and the microwave) must be triggered before an alarm is sent. Thus a normal PIR would alarm, while this unit would not. In good security system design, having both sensors is a great advantage.
Today with low power microwave systems this technology from 20 years ago can be put into a compact, wireless unit that enrolls easily into a 5800 equipped ademco system. Your alarm will not have false alarms with this unit - we use them all the time for PIR installations because of their dual sensor design and have never been called back due to thermal changes causing a false trigger.
The battery powered units lack the clearly visable LEDs of the wired units which indicate PIR, microwave, or both (alarm) to save power from the CR123 cell.

Buyers beware of the protected equipment claim ($75,000 repair or replacement)--it is apparently worthless. Had $1100 damge to plasma tv and home theater receiver which the factory approved repair technician certified was caused by lightning surge through the properly connected Monster PowerCenter; filed the claim and returned the device to Monster Cable which then took 6 weeks for them to deny claim. Do your research and you will find that there are much less expensive and higher joule rated supressors available, although I don't know if they would do any better at protecting your equipment. In addition avoid the claims by salesmen (such as at Best Buy about signal reduction in lower priced HDMI cables--Consumer reports found there is no difference. Digital signals are either on or off there is nothing to degrade. Expensive lesson for me.

Welp the good is that it does everything and more that the description says. It functions like they say it will function. Actually it also doesn't work properly with Skype, but hey, they didn't claim it would.
When it's all working it really is a neat gizmo. Would be perfect alarm system backup or something where only touch tone was needed.
The big problem I have with this is EVERYONE complains about the audio quality they are getting. I don't know if it's the fact it's powering every phone in the house, or if it's a crappy prepaid cell phone, or a crappy XLink. I need to get another phone to be sure.
If the audio quality was acceptable, this thing would be the shiznit. Even without a reliably working Skype interface. But with some of the poorest audio quality going, maybe it's back to majic jack.

Iblast Black 6W Ipod Docking Speakers Charger Works All MP3 Plyr
Average Reviews:

When I got this thing out of the box, I couldn't believe how light the thing was. Oh, and it doesn't come with adpaters for the new video iPods so you'll have to rig something. I wrapped some tape around the 10/20 gb adapter and it works fine.
So with all those problems, why the 4 stars?
Well first off, it works. It plays music and charges. It can even serve as a dock for your computer. The music quality was better than anticipated and it is perfect for a small room. We got it to play gentle music for our newborn.
One stupid fact. You can play videos while it is docked and it kinda looks like a mini drive-in theatre.
This is NOT a bookend speaker system. You can't separate the speakers and the sound isn't full enough.
But it IS the cheapest dock/charger/speaker set on the market (that I could find) and it works.
Hope this helps.
