(More customer reviews)I've been looking for an inexpensive DVR for the car and found that many had shortcomings:
1. Most auto DVRs are for law enforcement and are expensive
2. Others are small DVR's that require the user to manually start recording every time you get into the car.
3. Most recording devices that don't use tape hate it when cutting power while recording, resulting in lost data/video.
This device overcomes all three drawbacks. Once set in "live" record mode, it turns on and records automatically whenever the ignition is on. Alternately, you can wire it into the car alarm or use the motion detection for recording.
On the highest quality setting, a 4GB CF card lasts a mere 40 minutes. When the device runs out of space, it starts recording over the oldest data, so the previously mentioned card will always have the last 40 minutes of data on it. There's not much else to say about it, it does a simple job and does it well.
Installation is simple - tap into 12V that is hot when the ignition is on and wire in a camera to the RCA connector and the same 12V lead. That's it for a minimal setup. The back has a connector for an alarm input and an optional remote IR sensor so you can hide the unit and still operate it with the remote.
For the drawbacks:
1. I keep this in a glovebox and it fits well - it's about the size of a paperback. The problem is that it gets HOT. I may need to relocate it where there is more air circulation.
2. The manual states you need a 300x CF card for proper recording. Depending on what you use it for, this may not be true. One of the functions is recording while viewing previously recorded material, and that may need a faster card, but I only use this for recording and view data on the computer. I have used a card as slow as 120x (4GB Transcend) to a 266x (4GB RiData) to the current 133x (32GB Kingston) with no video problems or glitches.
3. The remote sucks. They used a remote for some other device and the keys are not intuitive at all. Still, all you need it so set it and forget it.
