(More customer reviews)I bought this starter, as it is a nice simple unit to warm up my car on cold winter mornings (I live in Alaska). It performs its function extremely well. FYI I installed it on a 1996 Subaru Legacy.
This unit will work on a Diesel engine vehicle, and will work on a vehicle with a manual transmission, but I highly recommend not installing on a manual transmission vehicle. Also note that if you have a car with a factory security system or a transponder in the key, the installation will be much more complicated, and may require some extra modules to work.
This is a pretty simple unit, without all the bells and whistles of the more elaborate remote starts. It will start and shutdown your car remotely, and turn on the parking lights to let you know the car is running. It can be programed to unlock your existing power doors when you start the car, but I did not use this feature and it MAY require an extra relay. Also note this would leave your car running and unlocked when you start it, so it may not be what you want if you are looking for something to lock/unlock your car remotely as well.
Performance and range have been very good. It easily starts the car 500-1000 feet away, even though building walls. I have noted issues if there is a lot of metal in the building you are in, or the car is parked around a lot of other cars, range may be reduced.
This is NOT a 2-way remote. The only way to verify if your car is running is to visually check to see if the parking lights are on.
Installation was tricky. I should note I have a great deal of experience working on cars and their electrical systems, and install took me about 4 hours due to the many trips back to check if I am really understanding it right. It is critical to program the unit to recognize the vehicle tachometer signal or it will not work, and the instructions included are very lacking for a novice installer to make sense of.
If you are installing it yourself, note you WILL need a set of wire strippers, solder and a soldering iron (do not use crimp connectors or your car may not start when you need it), a good manual & wiring diagram for your car indicating which wire is which (some of this information is available for free on the internet if you look - I found my information on [...] and they have wiring information for a lot of different vehicles), heat shrink tubing, electrical tape, and wire ties. You will also need a basic set of screwdrivers and wrenches to take apart the underside of your dashboard to access your vehicle wiring (this will be different for every car).
A good product, works great, but the manual & installation instructions need to be better written.
